Every electrical shop above three trucks eventually hits the same wall: one dispatcher holds the entire schedule, the tech-skill matrix, and the zone map in their head. When they take a Friday off, the wheels come off — wrong techs sent to wrong jobs, two-hour drives across town, missed permit windows, and angry customers. AI dispatching solves this specific bottleneck without firing the dispatcher. This is how it actually works in 2026.

The Single-Dispatcher Bottleneck

Pull the schedule for the last 30 business days at any 4-to-8-truck residential-and-light-commercial electrical shop and the same patterns appear. The morning kickoff takes 35 to 55 minutes while the dispatcher manually drags appointments around the board. New service calls landing between 9am and 2pm get re-shuffled three or four times before they stick. Drive times average 27 to 34 minutes between stops because the zone logic lives in the dispatcher's memory, not the FSM.

Tech-skill matrix. Every tech in the FSM is tagged with license tier (apprentice, journeyman, master), state license number and expiration, residential vs. commercial experience, certifications (EVITP for EV chargers, Generac or Kohler factory training for generators, OSHA 30 for commercial sites), languages spoken, and ladder/lift comfort.

Job requirements. The intake from the AI receptionist — or the call-taker — produces a structured job record: emergency vs. service vs. project, panel manufacturer, service amperage, commercial vs. residential, required certifications, equipment needed.

Schedule state. Current assignments, open windows, travel between consecutive stops, lunch and end-of-day constraints, on-call rotation.

Zone density. Geocoded customer address, current tech locations from the FSM's GPS feed, and live traffic from a routing API (Google Maps Platform or Mapbox).

The AI scores every available tech against the job, ranks the top three, and presents the recommendation in the dispatch UI. The dispatcher confirms with one click — or overrides with a reason code that the AI learns from.

The 10-Day Rollout

The mistake most shops make is rolling out AI dispatching across all trucks on day one. The right shape is a 10-day phased rollout that starts on a single truck and a single zone.

Day 1. Pull the tech-skill matrix out of the dispatcher's head onto paper. Every tech, every license, every certification, every zone preference. The dispatcher will resist this — push through. The matrix is the foundation; without it, the AI has nothing to score against.

Days 2 and 3. Load the matrix into the FSM. Verify license numbers and expiration dates. Tag certifications with expiration dates. Geocode every recurring customer address (most FSMs do this automatically; verify the geocode quality for outlying zip codes).

Day 4. Vendor configuration. Walk through your dispatch logic with the implementation engineer: how do you handle emergency calls in zone overlap, what is the rule for journeyman-only vs. apprentice-supervised work, what is the lunch policy, what is the end-of-day cutoff.

Days 5 and 6. Shadow mode. The AI generates recommendations for every dispatch decision, but the dispatcher still runs the board. The dispatcher compares the AI's recommendation to their own decision and logs every disagreement.

Day 7. Vendor retunes against the disagreement log. Typically the AI gets 70 to 80 percent agreement on day 5; after retuning, it should hit 92-plus percent.

Days 8 and 9. Live cutover on a single zone or a single truck. The dispatcher reviews every AI recommendation before confirming, but the AI is now the primary decision-maker.

Day 10. Full review. Pull the metrics: average drive time per stop, dispatcher decision time per job, jobs declined for capacity. Decide on full cutover.

Metrics That Matter

Four numbers tell you whether the AI dispatcher is working.

Drive time per stop. Target: 14 to 22 percent reduction from baseline within 30 days. This is the headline metric.

Dispatcher decision time. Time from a new job landing on the board to a confirmed tech assignment. Baseline is typically 4 to 6 minutes per job. Target: under 30 seconds after confirmation.

Skill-match accuracy. Jobs where the assigned tech had every required license and certification. Target: 100 percent. Any miss is a compliance event.

Same-day fit rate. Service calls landing before noon that get scheduled same-day. Baseline: 31 to 44 percent. Target: 58-plus percent after route optimization compresses drive time and opens slots.

Pitfalls

Stale tech-skill matrices. A new EVITP certification that does not make it into the FSM means the AI keeps routing EV charger jobs to senior journeymen who do not have the cert while the qualified apprentice sits idle. Audit the matrix quarterly.

Letting the AI assign without confirmation. The dispatcher must remain in the loop, especially in the first 60 days. Auto-assign without review creates blind spots that compound.

Ignoring tech preferences. Techs have favorite zones, favorite customer types, and a relationship history the AI does not see. Configure preference weights and revisit them monthly.

Geocoding failures in rural zones. Outlying zip codes and rural routes geocode poorly. Manually verify the geocode for any customer more than 25 miles from the shop. The AI will optimize against bad coordinates without flagging it.

Skipping the emergency override. Emergencies must bypass optimization. Configure a hard rule: any job tagged emergency goes to the nearest qualified tech on shift regardless of route impact.

FAQ

Does AI dispatching work for a 2-truck shop?

Marginally. Below three trucks, the gains from scoring across techs are small. The dispatcher in a 2-truck shop already holds the matrix easily. Spend the budget on the AI receptionist instead.

What about commercial shops with project crews?

AI dispatching is designed for service-call volume. For project crews running multi-day or multi-week installs, the scheduling logic is different — the AI helps with crew scoping and equipment readiness, not minute-by-minute dispatch. Different product, different rollout.

Will my dispatcher quit if I install this?

If you sell it correctly, no. The dispatcher's job becomes management — exception handling, customer escalations, tech mentoring — instead of lookup. The shops that lose dispatchers are the ones that fail to reframe the role.

How does the AI handle a callout for a sick tech?
